Liberty

On this day in 1781 Lord Cornwallis surrendered at
Yorktown to the combined French & American
Revolutionary forces under Genl. Washington.
It was the beginning of the great American republic
that lasted eighty years. When the British troops
left their trenches to stack arms, their bands
played "The World Turned Upside Down." General
Washington ordered worship services of thanksgiving
to God for his army.

On this date in 1918 Sergeant Alvin C. York single-handedly killed 25 German soldiers, captured 132 more, and confiscated 35 machine guns while separated from his patrol. He hailed, of course, from Tennessee.
